Borups Allé revitalised with plane trees and StrataCell™ soil cell system

Borups Allé is one of the main entry roads into Copenhagen. The old poplars that had characterised the stretch for decades had poor growing conditions. Many had already been lost, and the few remaining had caused problems for pavements, drainage and traffic safety. Therefore, the Danish Road Directorate initiated a comprehensive replanting project between Hulgårdsvej and Hillerødgade, where a total of 58 new plane trees were established.

Better growth conditions with StrataCell™

To ensure that the new trees had better conditions than their predecessors, the tree pits were constructed using the StrataCell™ soil cell system in three layers. StrataCell forms a strong matrix structure that prevents soil compaction and ensures that the roots have both air and space to grow – even in an area with heavy traffic loads.

The system is produced from 100% recycled plastic and is easy to install. At the same time, it can withstand very high loads, making it ideal for urban spaces such as Borups Allé, where the tree pits extend far beneath the cycle path.

Another advantage is that the system can easily be adapted to accommodate existing pipes or cables.

A long-lasting solution

The project included 36 trees along the cycle paths and carriageway as well as 22 trees in the central reservation. The trees were planted as 4–5 metre tall plane trees, which will quickly grow and give the avenue a distinct green character. We look forward to following their development in the coming years!
