Paper Island, Copenhagen
A new landmark in openhagen’s harbour
Papirøen is one of Copenhagen’s most prestigious and recent urban development projects. Formerly home to industrial buildings and warehouses, the island is now being transformed into a vibrant urban district with housing, cultural facilities, and public recreational spaces – including the striking new Water Culture House, designed by Japanese architecture firm Kengo Kuma & Associates.
The development is guided by a strong ambition to be accessible and inclusive for all. This calls for solutions that are not only technically sound but also architecturally cohesive.
Architecture inspired by industry and heritage
The overall masterplan and architecture have been developed by Cobe, who drew inspiration from the site’s industrial past and historic warehouses. The result is a contemporary yet timeless expression, where elegant brickwork, natural tones, and robust materials come together in a harmonious design.
Level access and seamless transitions
The high-quality appearance of the buildings is underpinned by carefully selected materials – including Milford’s Canyon 2.0 threshold drainage channel, made from durable stainless steel. Used throughout the development, the channel ensures a minimum 150 mm clearance at the base of the facades while enabling step-free access for residents and visitors. At the same time, it provides ventilation for the plinth and efficient surface water drainage – fully aligned with modern construction standards and technical requirements.
