Kronløbsøen, Copenhagen

A new island and a local green haven

Kronløbsøen is a newly established island in Copenhagen’s Nordhavn, a former industrial harbour district undergoing continuous development. With several footbridge connections, the island acts as a key link in the neighbourhood, helping to create a more cohesive and accessible waterfront.

The car-free island covers 9,500 m² and includes both residential and commercial buildings, distributed across six separate volumes forming a courtyard-style block. A total of 233 apartments are being constructed, ranging in size from 50 to 200 m² – all with at least one balcony. The ground floor is intended for shops, cafés, and restaurants, supporting an active urban environment.

Kronløbsøen’s architecture is inspired by the iconic chalk cliffs at Stevns Klint, with a distinctive expression marked by light, layered brick façades. Beneath the island lies a four-level underground parking facility with space for 1,100 cars, bicycle parking, and technical installations – all situated below the water surface.

The project is DGNB Gold-certified and contributes with new, green urban spaces and activity zones in a dense, modern waterfront neighbourhood.

Milford’s contribution

Milford’s Canyon 1.0 drainage channel is used throughout Kronløbsøen – a classic solution designed to prevent moisture build-up at the building base while enabling step-free access. Canyon 1.0 is made of stainless steel and features an open base, allowing façade water to infiltrate directly into the ground. For this project, a classic 30x9 mm grating in galvanized steel was chosen to complement the raw, grey aesthetic of the building façades.
