Bjärred Torg
Bjärred Torg – a modern meeting place with a green identity
In the coastal town of Bjärred, southern Sweden, the central square has undergone a remarkable transformation—from a traditional parking lot to a modern, welcoming urban space. Today, Bjärred Torg is a vibrant meeting point where locals and visitors alike can sit down, meet friends, or simply enjoy an ice cream in the sun.
Organic forms and flexible materials
The square’s design balances functionality and aesthetics, with a clear focus on comfort and movement. Throughout the area, inviting seating zones have been created using soft, organic shapes that naturally guide pedestrian traffic while forming small, calm pockets within the space. A key feature of the square’s new identity is the circular planting beds with integrated benches—green elements that also provide comfortable seating.
Milford, in collaboration with the Danish architecture firm Juul Frost Architects, delivered the steel edging solutions and wooden benches for the project. The Contrast Freestyle system was used—a standard solution that allows the architect complete freedom to create flexible shapes and dimensions. The same solution was applied to the sun terraces, where the steel edging defines the levels and supports the square’s clean, modern design language.
Green elements that bring life to the space
The greenery has been carefully integrated into the overall concept, adding shade and variation. The curved planting areas—featuring grasses, perennials, and small trees—complement the square’s elegant paving and give the space a softer, more inviting character.
Bjärred Torg is a great example of how even smaller urban spaces can be transformed into vibrant, well-functioning meeting places—through thoughtful landscape design and flexible products that support both form and function.
