Green outdoor spaces on the quay at BIG’s new headquarters

Where Sundkaj meets sky and sea in the rugged Nordhavn district, BIG has placed its new headquarters in a striking architectural contrast between concrete and greenery. The outdoor areas surrounding the building have been designed as a lush garden wrapping around the base, creating a welcoming urban space – despite the exposed location at the edge of the quay.

Establishing a mature “forest” on a concrete deck with limited soil volume requires both ambition and expertise. Yet with a carefully planned process and the right solutions, a thriving green landscape has been created from day one. Tall trees – up to 12 metres high – have been planted using robust species like pine, oak, beech, alder, and birch, all anchored using Milford’s underground anchoring systems that ensure stability without visible elements.

Between the trees, grasses, perennials, and herbs spread across the forest floor, giving the impression that this green oasis has always belonged to Sundkaj.

Underground tree anchoring with the RBG system

For the BIG project, Milford supplied the RBG system – a specially developed solution for underground anchoring of root-balled trees, designed for use on rooftops and deck structures with shallow soil layers. The system requires no deep anchoring and allows for a fully concealed installation. The RBG system is delivered complete with tested straps and fittings and is suitable for trees with a trunk circumference of up to 45 cm and a height of up to 7.5 metres. It’s an efficient, discreet and maintenance-free solution that ensures optimal growing conditions – even in demanding environments.
