Rooftop terrace, Copenhagen
Frederikssundsvej 11 – From Grey Surfaces to Green Living Spaces
In Copenhagen’s northwest district, a rooftop terrace on the fourth floor has been transformed from a bare, grey surface into a green oasis for young residents. Creating lush outdoor spaces at height places special demands on weight, water, and wind. Here, raised planters in several levels have created the right growing conditions for a varied planting, while creative wire systems allow climbing plants to spread and form a green backdrop for the terrace.
Creative Green Walls
A striking feature is the long rear wall, where the GreenWall wire system supports climbing plants such as clematis and honeysuckle. The system is used here in a highly imaginative way: inspired by local fauna, the architects chose to shape no fewer than eight large moths in steel wire. It’s a reminder that wire systems don’t need to be purely vertical or horizontal – with creativity and boldness, they can achieve striking transformations.
From Rooftop to Walkways
The transformation doesn’t stop at the terrace. The walkways are also included in the project, where planters combined with wire systems create green connections between floors and provide residents with extra space for relaxation and community. Here, GreenWall has been pulled up along the planters, guided to the floor above, and looped back again – another example of how the system can be adapted and used creatively.
Efficient Water Management with CoreBlue
To ensure long-lasting planting without excessive water use, Milford’s CoreBlue system has been installed in the planters. The underground stone wool cassettes function as a water reservoir, ensuring consistent moisture even in dry and exposed conditions. On the walkways, where some planters are located under cover, CoreBlue is particularly valuable as it reduces the need for manual watering.
A Green and Relaxing Refuge
With this project, the developer set out to bring more nature into residents’ daily lives. The result is a new, informal retreat where both biodiversity and quality of life are at the forefront.
